Partnerships and Impact Manager

University of Sheffield - Faculty of Science

Job Reference Number: UOS017702

The Faculty is seeking to grow the number and depth of its strategic partnerships with external organisations in industry and academia, and with our alumni. This role will be responsible for identifying and then delivering effective and targeted relationships for the Faculty’s departments with tangible financial and non-financial research, teaching and reputations outputs.

You will also play an important role within a virtual cross-university partnerships development team, which brings together partnerships activity from research, teaching, global and alumni perspectives. You will represent the Faculty in the development of a portfolio of University-wide partnerships led by the President and Vice Chancellor and the Director of Strategic Projects and Communications. This will require a highly responsive approach, and there is, therefore, an expectation that you will understand both Faculty and University priorities and opportunities, and have the ability to work in a virtual team with senior colleagues as appropriate.

Supporting colleagues to build partnerships with people and organisations in the public, private and third sectors, you will help stimulate opportunities to increase translational research and also to enrich the research that we do; fuelling innovation and keeping our researchers in touch with the questions and challenges faced by modern society.

The University has formalised its commitment to Innovation, Impact and Knowledge Exchange (IIKE) around four key objectives:

  • To create and maintain deeper partnerships with external organisations;
  • To make the most of our intellectual property;
  • To engage with our city and region; and
  • To embed IIKE within our organisation.

The Faculty of Science brings together world leading research groups, cutting edge facilities and inspirational teaching. Managing a small team of staff, you will help academic colleagues to identify and build the relationships needed to maximise the economic, social, technological and political benefits of their research activities, facilities and outputs and to deliver against the above objectives.

Reporting to the Faculty Director of Operations, with a dotted line reporting to the University’s Innovation and Knowledge Exchange Coordinator and the Research Strategy Manager for the Faculty, you will routinely work with members of the Faculty Executive, and in particular the Faculty Director for Research and Innovation, to develop and realise our ambitions with a keen eye on the bottom line. You will build relationships internally across academic disciplines and with professional staff to maximise opportunities and support; and externally both through the development of industry/academic consortia and directly with the beneficiaries of our research.

It is essential that you have a deep understanding of research and innovation in a higher education environment and direct experience of supporting research collaborations with external partners. You will need a good understanding of the funding landscape for these activities, how universities are adapting to these changes, and be able to provide evidence of success in helping develop partnerships for both income and impact. You will have excellent line management and organisation skills, communication skills, and be a confident and experienced networker with established networks to draw upon.

You will have a good honours degree or equivalent experience and experience of leadership and management at a senior level.
