The University of Liverpool’s Online Doctor of Education (EdD) is an international professional doctoral programme focussing on the latest practice, research, and leadership thinking in higher education. It is designed to help to promote the development of visionary sector leaders. Students advance through increasing levels of complex analysis, with all taught modules linked by common themes – such as leadership and personal impact, collaborative learning and practitioner research. It culminates in a thesis stage during which an extended piece of doctoral level research and writing is undertaken.

We are currently recruiting for:
Laureate Online Education in partnership with the University of Liverpool is accepting applications for online Doctoral Thesis Supervisors for our EdD programme. As student numbers increase, recruitment of additional online faculty for the Doctoral programmes is continuous. 

Role profile:
We are looking to recruit individuals with a background in educational research and research methodologies in higher education to augment the existing team of online thesis supervisors for the EdD programme. Thesis supervisors are expected to maintain regular contact with their research students. This primarily occurs on an individual basis with the assistance of appropriate forms of communication technology. The supervision is conducted as part of a small supervisory team.   

The ideal candidate should be:

  • A specialist in the field of higher education who has recent experience of supervising students engaged in professional doctorate programmes to successful completion.
  • Familiar with theoretical concepts and their application to the practice of Higher Education.

Essential Criteria:

  • A doctoral level qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
  • Active researcher of higher education.
  • Have three peer-reviewed publications in journals that are at least of recognised national excellence or two publications in peer-reviewed journals and four other publicly available intellectual contributions.
  • Prior experience of supervising or examining doctoral candidates.
  • Excellent skills for oral and written communication in English.
  • Capacity to maintain good personal relations while working remotely.

Desirable criteria:

  • Engagement as a member of an editorial board or as a reviewer of articles submitted for publication in a recognised academic journal.
  • Previous experience of working with online doctoral students.
  • Acting as an external examiner of research degrees.

Application is by CV, which should include a list of recent and relevant publications (journal publications, conference papers and other scholarly contributions, especially those in the last five years) and evidence of relevant higher education experience, duration and subjects taught as well as details of two referees.

  • Details about your earned doctorate: awarding institution, date of award, subject matter, and thesis title
  • Details of supervisory experience and/or examiner experience at doctoral level

Initial training:
Selected applicants will be trained to undertake this role in a virtual environment, similar to the one we use with our students. It will be conducted over a two week period, is 100% online and not restricted to specific hours or geographic location. The training is experiential, intense and founded on the best current research in online learning and teaching in a global context. It represents the first of many opportunities to engage with new colleagues from around the world. After successful completion of the training you will be given the opportunity to match with one of our students entering the dissertation phase. When the matching is complete an experienced supervisor will then mentor you for at least 8 months. Full certification as one of our online Doctoral Supervisors is achieved on the basis of meeting all the mentoring phase criteria.
