Research Fellow

University of Birmingham - School of Dentistry, Institute of Clinical Sciences

We seek to appoint a capable and highly motivated individual to the School of Dentistry, College of Medical and Dental Sciences.

A 7 months vacancy has arisen in an EPSRC funded project that aims to develop innovative computer methods to analyse, quantify and understand the information contained in digital microscopy images.

This post is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to work on the projectNovel context-based segmentation algorithms for intelligent microscopy”, where the post holder will be expected to undertake research in the field of digital image analysis. The proposed programme aims to develop innovative computer methods to analyse, quantify and understand the information contained in digital microscopy images of oropharyngeal cancer.

The project centres on the development and implementation of context-based imaging programs and spatial logics (in particular Discrete Mereotopology) to advance the automated analysis and diagnosis of squamous cell carcinomas. These programs and spatial logics will be used to (a) encode, interpret and reason about topological information in segmented histological images, (b) allow methods of data extraction that are both quantitative and reproducible, and (c) enable symbolic and automated reasoning programs to be used alongside numerical methods.

The candidate should have a PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Medical Imaging or related subject or equivalent qualifications and past experience in medical imaging, with a proven track-record in technical Java or C++ programming.

Informal enquires can be made to Prof. Gabriel Landini: email G.Landini@bham.ac.uk
