Research Assistant/Associate (Composite Molten Salt & Ceramic Membranes) - D97247R

Newcastle University - Faculty of Science, Agriculture & Engineering - Engineering - Materials and Manufacturing

£27,285 to £28,936 (PhD not awarded)
£29,799 to £38,833 (PhD Awarded)

A Research Assistant/Associate position is available in one of the leading chemical engineering groups in the UK led by Professor Ian Metcalfe, FREng. The group is currently home to around ten PhD students and five post-doctoral researcher and is home to excellent research facilities. The project is in the area of solid state oxygen carriers and their interaction with the gas phase.

The work will focus on the use of chemical looping processes for reaction and separation. One of the key global challenges that faces us today is reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Chemical looping offers the opportunity to produce hydrogen gas and simultaneously capture carbon dioxide, both key components of any industrial greenhouse gas reduction strategy.

You will have a PhD (awarded or working towards) in chemical engineering, materials science or a related subject with experience in at least one of the following: chemical looping, inorganic ion-conducting oxide membranes, synthesis, characterisation and application of metal oxides in chemical processes including the study of surface exchange and ion transport processes. You will have the opportunity to develop your expertise in an area highly relevant to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in energy and industrial processes. You will have a high level of technical competency and will have experience of working in a team, as well as the ability to write in peer reviewed journals commensurate with experience.

The post is available fixed term for 12 months and is full time.
