Director of Student Affairs

University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham leads research intensive universities in the UK for the quality of student experience that it provides: its NSS performance is strong and developing, it was awarded Gold in the recent teaching excellence framework and was recently named University of the Year for Graduate Employment. It is ambitious to consolidate this further in coming years, strengthening student engagement and using technology and new approaches to customer service to support student needs.

The current incumbent is moving to lead the development of the University’s new campus in Dubai and a new Director is sought to take on the role. It represents an excellent opportunity for someone who is ambitious to lead an outstanding directorate, likely with a view to developing their career to broader leadership roles.

The Directorate has around 100 staff across a range of areas including: student hub, student support, funding/graduation and awards, as well as several other areas. In recent years a brand-new student hub has been developed on campus, and the team has been playing a central role in developing new digital approaches to the student experience, as well as leading on key compliance activities such as Tier 4 visa management.

The ideal appointee will be experienced in leading a professional service in a University, if not directly focused on student affairs than in an area where they have compelling experience of customer focus. Applicants from outside Higher Education will be considered where their experience is relevant to this role. Ability to lead an effective and delegated team is critical, as are the communication skills and interpersonal deftness to work with people across the institution – from students to senior academics and council members. They will be strategically minded, with an eye to the future of the student experience.
