We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Scientific Study Coordinator to apply their skills to the coordination of the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit's (CEU) growing portfolio of large-scale epidemiological studies. The CEU collaborates closely with the National Health Service Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) to conduct large-scale trials in blood donor populations.  For example, the CEU has already conducted the 50,000-participant INTERVAL study and the 30,000-participant COMPARE study, with several additional sub-studies completed or in progress. The CEU, in collaboration with NHSBT, is currently working towards larger studies of blood donors (STRIDES) scheduled to start in 2018. The STRIDES study aims to recruit >1 million blood donors in a cluster-randomised trial to prevent vasovagal reactions, of which about 250,000 will provide biological material and detailed information. Consequently, we seek an experienced Scientific Study Coordinator who has extensive experience in managing large-scale trials or studies. STRIDES will be the main focus for the post-holder, who will be the senior Scientific Study Coordinator for this study, though we anticipate the complexity of STRIDES potentially requiring the post-holder to build a team of study coordinators and administrative staff around them.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Management of all day to day aspects of CEU-led studies of UK blood donors. iii) Oversight of the data collection and transfer; iv) Responsibly for managing budgets  v) Ensuring study milestones and deadlines are met
  • Prepare scientific and administrative documents including scientific protocols, ethics reports, reports to funding bodies and correspondence with collaborators.
  • Contribute to progress updates and reports for funding bodies and the Trial Management, Steering and Data Monitoring Committees. Become a contributing member of the Management and Steering Committees.
  • Management of study coordination and administration teams.
  • Assist in the dissemination of study results by preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed scientific journals, reports to internal and external regulatory authorities and publications on websites etc. Prepare abstracts and presentations for conferences.
  • Any other tasks arising on a day-to-day basis that are necessary to ensure the smooth-running of projects and the achievement of project milestones and targets.

Education: Educated to degree level with a BSc in a relevant scientific field (e.g. biological or medical science) and hold a PhD or have equivalent experience.

Experience and Skills: The role will require relevant experience in scientific study coordination and the ability to work independently as well as part of a large team including principal investigators and senior managers, project managers, data managers, administrators and statisticians.
