Applications are invited for two Research Associate positions in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London. The positions are funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and will involve the study of Vafa-Witten invariants of complex projective surfaces.

The project will involve working closely with Richard Thomas and the geometry group at Imperial on some aspect of Vafa-Witten theory. Depending on the expertise of the candidate, this will involve research into some of the following topics: enumerative invariants (cohomological or K-theoretic) in algebraic geometry, the geometry or geometric representation theory of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces, the study of coherent sheaves – and their derived categories – on algebraic varieties, deformation theory of sheaves and virtual fundamental classes, derived algebraic geometry, wall crossing formulae, virtual localisation calculations.

The successful candidates will hold a PhD or equivalent level of professional qualifications and/or experience in algebraic geometry or closely related fields.

It is essential that you have:

  • Original research results in algebraic geometry, geometric representation theory or theoretical high energy physics

  • A broad and strong background in geometry

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to carry out original research and to produce published research papers
  • Ability to identify, develop and apply new concepts, techniques and methods
