Research Associate

University of Cambridge - Department of Clinical Neurosciences

Applications are invited for a Research Associate Post in the Professor Patrick Chinnery Group

We are seeking a post-doctoral laboratory research scientist keen to understand the role of mitohochondria in ageing. Mitochondria acquire damage to their DNA, lipis and proteins as we age ¿ but it is not known whether these changes are innocent bystanders, or whether they contribute to the ageing process itself. This post forms a new link between the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit (MBU, Prof Patrick Chinnery) and the Centre for Protein Misfolding in the Department of Chemistry (CPM, Profs Chris Dobson and Michele Vendruscolo). Their joint aim is to use a combination of genomic, cell biology and chemical techniques to determine whether observed mitochondrial changes drive senescence in mammalian cells.

The role holder is to dissect out the sub-cellular mechanism responsible for age-related mitochondrial changes using state of the art single cell molecular and cell biology approaches, including whole genome sequencing, RNAseq, and epigenetics in human and animal model systems. The role holder will work closely with bioinformaticians, clinical and molecular scientists within the MBU and CPM, and widely across the University, most notably with the Stem Cell Institute and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Centre.

For questions relating to the post, please contact please contact Professor Chinnery on pfc25@medschl.cam.ac.uk

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
