Research Assistant in Advanced Anaerobic Bioreactor Design

We are seeking a full-time Research Assistant to join the Environmental Bioengineering group at the Department of Engineering Science (Begbroke/Central Oxford) in collaboration with Tropical Power.  The post is funded by Oxford Martin School in the first instance for 24 months, but there may be opportunities to extend.

The objective of this project is to improve the efficiency of conventional Anaerobic Digestors (AD) by designing systems which more closely resemble the cow rumen, which is significantly more effective than current AD systems.

Ideally the successful candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, chemical engineering. The post will require someone with well-developed practical skills in the design, assembly, establishment and running of bioreactors in this instance for AD. They will work as part of a multidisciplinary team composed of microbiologists, chemical engineers and members of Tropical Power, which has practical experience of designing, assembling and maintaining commercial AD systems. The post holder will ideally be experienced at working closely with workshop engineers/technicians in designing and modifying current bioreactor systems, in this case for containment of plant residue undergoing microbiological transformations, whist managing the solid and liquid components of the plants residue. This will include close monitoring and development of methods for controlling the chemical conditions in the bioreactors including of pH and redox.
