Collections Assistant

University College London - UCL Culture

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 5. The salary range will be £24,020 - £27,316 per annum , inclusive of London Allowance.

UCL Culture invite applications for the post of Collections Assistant. UCL Culture manages museums, theatres, and collections and facilitates engagement within and outside of UCL. This includes the Bloomsbury Theatre, the Grant Museum of Zoology, the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, UCL Art Museum, the UCL Pathology Collections and the auto icon Jeremy Bentham. We bring diverse performers and audiences into the heart of UCL to energise the student experience and fuel UCL’s creative culture with innovative cultural experiences. We collaborate with UCL students and staff to provoke, connect and engage more powerfully. We use our objects, insights and expertise to reframe questions and surface new ideas. We believe that open minds see further.

UCL Museums are a dynamic and growing service that have won national awards. The collections house over a large number of outstanding artefacts and specimens across arts and science disciplines. Promoting research and teaching with these collections is a high priority, and the museums play a key role in engaging new audiences with UCL'S academic work.

UCL Art Museum is home to an important collection of 12,000 works of art from the 1500s to the present day in a range of media. Its principal holdings are of prints and drawings, with smaller collections of painting and sculpture and a growing collection of time-based media work. With its roots as a teaching and research collection for students and staff at the Slade School of Fine Art, the collections present a unique archive of English art school practice in the modern age that includes Old Masters and prize-winning student work. Its primary uses remain cross-disciplinary teaching and research, available to staff and students at UCL and the wider academic community. Situated in a traditional Print Room at the heart of UCL, the Museum’s collections are publicly accessible through temporary exhibitions, displays across campus and collaborative projects with external partners.

The Collections Assistant works with all aspects of museum work and collections care, as well as visitor services. Based in UCL Art Museum, the Collections Assistant will also contribute to collections projects across the department.

The successful candidate will have experience of working in a museum environment with collections, including use of museum databases (e.g. Adlib), collections care and manual skills. They must have experience of identifying a range of art techniques and media. They will have excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
