The Barnett House-Nuffield Joint Scholarship

The Department of Social Policy and Intervention, University of Oxford, is offering graduate scholarships for students wishing to pursue doctoral – PhD – studies in an international and interdisciplinary centre of excellence in social policy.  It has been ranked first among UK social policy departments, and second worldwide.

For our three-year doctoral program, we seek candidates for the Barnett House-Nuffield Joint Scholarship with entry in October 2018.  

In addition, all applicants applying by 19 January 2018 will be considered for the University’s flagship Clarendon Scholarship Fund. The Department also regularly wins prestigious ESRC scholarships through the Grand Union Doctoral Training Partnership.

This scholarship is open to Social Policy students only, who are applying for a DPhil.  Doctoral students are part of our research cluster – the Oxford Institute of Social Policy (OISP) – which conducts cutting-edge research in a wide range of areas:

OISP is inviting DPhil proposals in the following broad topics: family and family policies, educational inequalities and educational policies, economic and social inequalities, poverty and social exclusion, social mobility and inequality of opportunity, labour market institutions and policies, retirement age policies, public attitudes on welfare state issues, welfare state changes in comparative perspective and the politics of social policy.

We offer doctoral students a unique graduate programme tailored to their individual needs. Our doctoral students are supervised and supported by internationally renowned academics. In addition, we offer a large and diverse range of seminars, workshops and advanced training opportunities in order to further enhance postgraduate research experience. Most of our doctoral students find jobs in leading research universities, international organisations or government departments.

Funding minimum/maximum: The Barnett House-Nuffield Joint Scholarship: 3 year fully-funded scholarship covering university and college fees.

We invite applications from outstanding graduates in Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Social Policy, Social Work and Sociology, or closely related fields.
