Research Engineer

University of Sheffield - Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) - Composites Centre, AMRC with Boeing

We have some exciting opportunities for Research Engineers to join our Composite Centre team at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre. The AMRC is a cluster of world-class centres for research into advanced manufacturing technologies used in the aerospace, power generation, medical and other high-value manufacturing sectors. The cluster has a global reputation for helping companies overcome manufacturing problems and has become a model for collaborative research involving universities, academics and industry, worldwide. We are part of the University of Sheffield who are the only university to feature in the Sunday Times 100 Best Not-For-Profit Organisations to Work For 2017.

The Composite Centre team focuses on producing and machining composite components, including hybrid parts combining high-performance metals and composites in a single structure. These structures can provide significant weight savings while maintaining the highest material and structural performance, offering improved fuel efficiency for aerospace and other transport applications.

Due to the continued expansion of the AMRC Composite Centre, additional Research Engineers are needed. We are looking for an individual who will contribute to the research objectives of the Composite Centre team, through delivery of a number of concurrent industrially-focused world-leading research and development projects as part of a team of researchers in an exciting and dynamic environment. The role will include planning of projects and resources, project team leadership, writing of reports for industrial partners, regular communication with customers and partners, delivery of projects to timescales and technical problem solving. The projects undertaken frequently involve overseas partners and there may be opportunities for travel across mainland Europe, the USA, Japan and South Korea.

The successful candidate will have a PhD level qualification, either in a relevant field or will have equivalent experience working in this area along with excellent communication skills both written and verbal and the ability to solve problems creatively. It is essential that you have technical knowledge of composites engineering or manufacturing and are able to apply this effectively in the workplace. You must have experience managing project resources, including staff, and developing a network of contacts within the organisation.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
