Tutorial Fellow and Associate Professorship or Professorship of Philosophy

Salary range: £46,336 - £62,219 p.a. (plus £8,230 p.a. college housing allowance – or alternatively free college accommodation, subject to availability). If awarded the title of full Professor, a further salary payment of £2,700 p.a. is payable from the University.

Pembroke College, Oxford, and the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Oxford are recruiting a Tutorial Fellow and Associate Professor or Professor of Philosophy, with effect from 1 September 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The area of specialisation for this post is the Philosophy of Physics. 

Applications are invited from candidates who are active researchers of outstanding ability in Philosophy, whose areas of research specialisation include Philosophy of Physics, and who have the ability to provide excellent tutorial teaching, classes and lectures. The successful candidate will be required to engage in scholarly research and publication, and to enthuse and inspire students at both undergraduate and graduate level through tutorials, classes, lectures and supervision. They will be expected to teach the following papers: (a) For the introductory first year course: Logic and General Philosophy and The Leibniz-Clarke Correspondence (introductory Philosophy of Physics); (b) For second, third, and fourth year, advanced courses: Knowledge and Reality, Intermediate Philosophy of Physics, Advanced Philosophy of Physics and Philosophy of Science. The ability to teach additional advanced papers would be an advantage. Candidates should hold a doctorate in Philosophy or a closely related subject, or be close to completion (and will need to have submitted their doctorate before taking up the post). Candidates should also have the ability to undertake pastoral responsibilities. The appointment will be a permanent post (after initial probation).
