Post Doctoral Researcher Position in Ice Mechanics

Aalto University - School of Engineering

We are looking for candidates for postdoctoral researcher positions in the Arctic Marine and Ice Technology research group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. A central part of our research are novel experiments and numerical modeling of the sea ice failure processes, ice fracture, and ice fragmentation.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher candidate to work on two different research topics: (1) fragmentation of ice blocks, and (2) fracture mechanics of sea ice. The fragmentation study will concentrate on ice block to ice block contacts under compression. We believe that this, yet unstudied, topic is of fundamental importance in sea ice failure processes. The fragmentation process is complicated, and the work requires careful experiments and the use of novel modelling methods in the analysis of the experiments. The second topic will concentrate on laboratory experiments on the fracture of saline columnar grained ice. This is a very important and topical problem in ice mechanics; the fracture of sea ice plays a central load in ice-structure interaction as well as in understaing the changing behaviour of Arctic sea ice.

Even if the direct applications of both research topics are related to sea ice, the results will have implications on other fields that include material fragmentation and fracture. Ice mechanics related applications of our research are in behavior of ships and structures in ice, and on the safety of maritime winter transportation.

The call is open for candidates with a wide range of backgrounds. Good understanding of solid and computational mechanics is required. A suitable background may come from applied or computational mechanics, mechanical engineering, marine engineering, civil engineering, engineering physics, or related disciplines. The applicant for the position must have a doctoral degree.

The position is at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and may include some work as a teaching assistant in our courses. Post-doc positions at Aalto University are usually for a two year period, but a contract is first made for one year, and the extension is subject to advance of research. The salary is according to the salary system of Aalto University.

How to apply

The application material includes:

  1. Motivation letter (maximum one A4 page).
  2. CV including publications and contact information for 2 reference persons.
  3. A certified copy of master's degree certificate and official transcript of records, and their translations, if the originals are not in Finnish, Swedish, or English.
  4. An English summary the Doctoral Thesis.
  5. Any other supporting documents, like recommendation letters.
  6. Proof of proficiency in Finnish, Swedish, or English if the applicant is not a native speaker of them.

All material should be submitted in English.

Applications with attachments (in pdf-format) are to be submitted no later than 31st of December 2017 through the link below. The position will be fulfilled as soon as a suitable candidate is found.

Aalto University reserves the right for justified reasons to leave the position open, to extend the application period, and to consider candidates who have not submitted applications during the application period.
