The Post

The Institute of Aquaculture, Faculty of Natural Sciences is offering a post-doctoral research assistant (PDRA) post to work with Dr Oscar Monroig and Dr Simon MacKenzie on a project focussed on exploring the effects that novel insect meal products used as raw materials in aquafeeds have on fish nutrition and health status. The post will have two key roles: 1) to assess the impact of insect meal products on fish health using animal-free systems (i.e. cell cultures), and 2) to investigate the impact that insect meal products have on fish health. The post is offered as a fixed term, part-time (40%) appointment for 24 months to start 1st February 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

  1. Primary cell culture
  2. Fish trial implementation and management
  3. Sample collection and archiving
  4. Biochemical analyses
  5. Gene expression analyses
  6. Bioinformatic and statistical analyses
  7. Disseminating the project results

Key Competencies and Attributes:

Excellent inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team. Relevant experience of fish nutrition and health studies, analytical and molecular laboratory analyses and research practices. The successful candidate is expected to be a competent computer user and be familiar with statistical and data handling packages (e.g. R, SPSS, Excel). The PDRA will be trained in the appropriate laboratory analytical techniques and some of the necessary research skills.
