Engineer – Service Delivery

The successful candidate will join a team that delivers University-wide IT services and bespoke services and systems that underpin the research and teaching activities of the School of Computer Science and Informatics. You will be dedicated to the provision of an efficient, effective and quality driven technical support service to staff and students within the Academic Research, Learning and Teaching, Corporate, and Administrative functions of the University.

The successful candidate will have experience in managing complex Linux environments, preferably within a research active setting. You will have knowledge of the full range of services required to support a complete end to end workstation and server infrastructure including but not limited to authentication services, file store management, access control, database services, configuration management and mail services. You will be recognised as a subject matter expert and provide in depth consultancy on a broad range of programming languages (i.e. Python, SQL, C++, PHP, Java,) and bespoke applications that support teaching and research activity. You will maintain an understanding of current and emerging technologies, and articulate understanding of how this will impact upon teaching and research active activity.

Within your area of responsibility, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  1. Contributing to the end to end provision of resilient and continually improving services across a broad range of complex IT technologies, supporting the teaching, research, and administrative needs of staff and students.
  2. The development of technology designs and specifications, including the documentation of architectures, topologies and configuration items.
  3. The specification and development of user/system interfaces, including validation and error correction procedures, processing rules, access, security and audit controls. You will assess associated risks, and specify recovery routines and contingency procedures. You will also assist with the translation of logical designs into physical designs. 
  4. The provision of infrastructure maintenance and support services. You will pro-actively monitor system performance, investigating and resolving faults and problems in a timely fashion, and identify opportunities to improve services. You will provide information, advice or training to users on functionality, correct operation and system constraints.

The role may also involve the line-management and leadership of staff supporting technical and functional solutions and/or services in the role-holder’s technical domain.
