Director of the Stephen Lawrence Research Centre

De Montfort University

De Montfort University (DMU) is an ambitious, globally-minded institution with a relentless focus on delivering excellent teaching and learning, high-quality research and a sector-leading student experience.  A culturally rich university with a strong commitment to the public good, it strives to maintain a stimulating and inclusive environment where staff and students are able to thrive. The university is a vibrant, multicultural hub of learning, creativity and innovation that never surrenders to convention.

DMU’s academic excellence, its strength and depth, its international presence and its mission to deliver public good will form the cornerstones of the soon to be created Stephen Lawrence Research Centre. Stephen Lawrence’s shocking murder and his inspiring legacy have had profound effects on British history and society. But 25 years on from Stephen’s tragedy, there is still much more to know, and to understand, in order to make meaningful changes in attitudes and society and combat racism through innovative research. This will drive the work of the Centre and ensure it takes a national and international lead in areas currently under-researched and even neglected. Researchers will examine the history of ethnic minorities, and of West Indians in particular, in post-war Britain; institutional racism; the experience of major ‘denials of justice’; and the personal psychology of racial violence. This work will be further strengthened by international collaboration and perspectives.

The role of inaugural Director offers a unique opportunity to scope, shape and lead the work of this important and high-profile Centre. The University is therefore seeking to appoint a globally-facing scholar with an internationally renowned academic profile in one of the Centre’s core areas of focus. They will bring a demonstrable track record of providing outstanding research leadership and possess the communication skills and ambassadorial qualities to build sustained and impactful relationships across a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
