Research Assistant –Training in Research Methods

University College London - UCL Division of Psychiatry

Applications are sought for this post on the Research Assistant grade which incorporates training in research methods. The appointee will work in the UCL Division of Psychiatry with Prof Glyn Lewis and will also work with Prof Nick Freemantle in the Institute of Clinical Trials and Methodology, and the network of medical statisticians based in departments across UCL.

The post is funded by NIHR in order to encourage graduates from a mathematics, engineering or other quantitative background to embark on a career in biomedical statistics or epidemiology. Applicants will be considered who have already completed a relevant MSc or are currently studying for an MSc. Training and research experience will be provided so that the successful candidate can progress to a PhD for example by applying for an NIHR Doctoral Fellowship

The research experience will be developed in collaboration with the post holder in order to develop their own interests. We are particularly interested in the design and analysis of randomised controlled trials so this will be a focus of the training programme and research. However, we also think that training and experience in the analysis of observational data is an important skill. There will also be opportunities in research into statistical methods.

This is a full time post for 24 months in the first instance.

The post holder will be a researcher with an undergraduate degree (2:1 or above) in a subject with a strong quantitative or mathematical component.

This is a developmental post and would be particularly suitable for someone at an early stage seeking a career in medical statistics or epidemiology with an interest in mental health research. Strong support for personal and professional development will be available.
