Research Associate in Multiscale Fluid Dynamics

A consortium of three internationally-leading UK institutions (Edinburgh University, Warwick University, and Daresbury Laboratory) are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop new modelling capabilities for multiscale interfacial fluid dynamics. This is part of a flagship £3.4M EPSRC Programme Grant targeting the multiscale fluid dynamics needed to simulate and design engineering flow systems of the future.

This position is to work with Prof Jason Reese, Dr Matthew Borg and Dr Rohit Pillai in the School of Engineering in the University of Edinburgh. The start date is May 2018 (or another date, by arrangement), and is funded for 24 months. More information about the research partnership is at

The principal objectives of this postdoc research project are:

  • To use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effect of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) on nanoscale liquid films and droplets;
  • To develop a hybrid multiscale technique for simulating the acoustowetting of microscale drops, by separating the rapid acoustic effects from the slower hydrodynamics. This problem is relevant to SAW-driven microfluidics, with applications in many industries.

You should have a PhD, or equivalent experience, in mechanical or chemical engineering, or physics, or applied mathematics, or computational science. Preference will be given to those with expertise in: molecular dynamics using either LAMMPS or OpenFOAM; the simulation of interfacial phenomena; hybrid multiscale methods for micro/nano fluid dynamics.
