Research Associate

University College London - UCL London Centre for Nanotechnology

The London Centre for Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary joint enterprise between University College London and Imperial College London, two of the world’s top universities. This is an opportunity to work in the groups of Professor S T Bramwell and Dr H Kurebayashi as part of a broad project that aims to develop the “spintronics” of exotic spin ice-type magnetic materials.  The appointment is for 2.5 years and will start at the earliest in February 2018 or thereafter. Responsibilities include conducting or contributing to thin-film growth of spin-ice materials by PLD and characterising these systems by ac-magnetometry, specific heat and other tools.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in Physics or a closely related discipline, or at least submitted their thesis.  Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £30,316 - £31,967 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.

Candidates should have experience in conducting solid-state physics research and in particular, in performing materials characterisation by X-ray diffraction, magnetometry and other useful tools. Fluency and clarity in spoken and written English, and a commitment to high-quality research are essential. The ability to deliver adequate training and support to other lab users is desirable.
