Job description

We are seeking motivated post-graduates (DSc/PhD) interested in teaming up with the Paper Converting and Packaging research group at Aalto University. The research group works with functional and smart material solutions for converted fiber products, composites, and packaging.

The post-graduate research for this opportunity pertains to lignocellulosic fiber research and development for tissue paper and materials performance testing. The position is situated on the main campus of Aalto University in Otaniemi within the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems ( The research work will be carried out in cooperation with industrial partners.


Applicants must hold a Doctoral degree from an accredited institution in a field appropriate for the applicant’s area of expertise and should have demonstrated background to natural fibers and tissue paper technology. Preference will be given to highly qualified applicants who completed the doctorate in the last three years. The applicants are expected to have the ability to characterize mechanical and chemical behaviour and deformation mechanisms of natural fiber containing networks as well as to relate this behaviour to microstructural features that may affect or control failure mechanisms in fibrous networks. Knowledge in wood and/or paper chemistry is also important.

The applicants should have very good verbal and written English communication skills, as well as ability to publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.


The fellowship is for two years. The salary is according to the salary system of Aalto University and depends on the candidate’s experience.
