Fixed Term contract for 12 months to commence as soon as possible

£23,837 to £27,304 per annum, with additional performance related pay up to £32,094 per annum (Research Assistant) or £32,094 per annum (Research Fellow)

You will contribute to the delivery of RCUK CO2LIQUID project and present the research findings in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

The project will provide a more fundamental answer to how impurities including water influences liquefaction, dehydration and compression processes. Given the importance that impurities play in process performance, a thorough understanding of the thermodynamics, phase equilibria and flow behaviour will enable more efficient processes to be developed to de-risk the expected phase changes or corrosion.

You will be responsible for experimental studies to achieve these improvements using existing Cranfield pilot-scale facilities. This project will involve collaboration with several Industries (PSE, FLIR and BOC Linde) relevant to CO2 transportation, and work closely with them. This will involve:

  • Evaluation of cost effective cryogenic CO2 transport system (-50degs, 10 bar) and its operational behaviour at triple point conditions.
  • Demonstrating the continuous operation of the pilot facility (which is part of the UKCCS Research Centre’s Pilot-scale Advanced Capture Technology Facilities, www.pact.ac.uk) to understand processes such as compression, liquefaction and dehydration.
  • Optimising the process operating conditions to facilitate the validation of flowsheet models for shipping transport.
  • Investigating and measuring the CO2 outflow in the immediate vicinity of leak from a shipping system and its impact on the local environment, and to deliver information on operation and maintenance strategies during loading and idle periods

You will join a successful multi-disciplinary team and will play an active role in this environment, adapting to changing work patterns and needs.

You will have a relevant PhD in Chemical / Process/Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (or be close to completion).  You must also have practical experience in cryogenic process system development, as well as an excellent understanding of service examinations of the pressure systems safety regulations, leading to production of research reports or academic papers, as well as ability to find appropriate solutions to academic and technical problems.
