Project overview:
The field of colloidal nanostructures is developing very rapidly. Semiconducting nanocrystals function already as superior fluorescence dyes in modern TV screens. Beyond, they can be used in opto-electronic devices, in sensors and as catalysts. The Swansea University is seeking a top class candidate to undertake a PhD studentship in the field of nanochemistry. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment in the Chemistry Department

The project will involve developing synthesis strategies for advanced colloidal nanostructures including two-dimensional semiconductors and their characterization. The structures will be used as conduction channel in advanced opto-electronic spin devices. Such research will enable new materials for faster and cheaper information processing. The PhD studentship offers an exciting opportunity to combine chemical and physical approaches to nanotechnology in a quickly developing field.

Eligibility

Academic requirements:
Applicants should have a minimum of a 2.1 undergraduate degree and/or a Master's degree with Merit (or equivalent qualification) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Engineering or related discipline and interest in combining informatics with physical science.

Residency criteria:
Due to funding restrictions, this studentship is open to UK/EU candidates or those with indefinite leave to remain in the UK only.

Additional Funding Information
This is a three year fully-funded EPSRC scholarship covering UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £14,553 (RCUK rate).
