The objective is to demonstrate ISF as a viable method for cost effective manufacturing for personalised medical devices. Sponsored by EPSRC, this post will support new materials forming focused research at Nottingham in collaboration with its academic and industrial partners.

The successful candidate will be expected to play an important part in the development of a bespoke ISF machine system. The person appointed will make considerable input in the testing and validation of a bespoke ISF machine and development of finite element methods to simulate and optimise ISF processing conditions. The person appointed will also be responsible for writing up research papers, coordinating research activities/supervision and developing new research programmes with project partners and end users. To support the project the successful candidate will have direct experience in most, if not all of the following areas

  • Incremental sheet forming (ISF) of metallic and non-metallic materials
  • FE simulation of ISF processes particularly in using continuum and micro-mechanics based approaches to study ISF formability and failure mechanisms of   materials
  • Experience in standard material testing and characterisation in using SEM, XRD, FIB and TEM
  • Practical skills in CNC based ISF operation and evaluation

Candidates must have at least a 2:1 degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (or a related discipline) and a PhD (or about to obtain) or equivalent. A strong publication background is desirable.
