Research Technician

Applications are invited for the position of a Research Technician, in the Physical Ecology lab (www.physicalecologylab.org) within the School of Life Sciences. The post holder will provide technical and research support to the group with a specific role in maintenance of both bacterial and phytoplankton cell cultures. 

The post-holder will contribute to the support and delivery of a Gordon and Betty Moore (www.moore.org) funded award entitled ‘Microscale viscosity gradients in the Oceans’. The Physical Ecology lab can offer a dynamic research environment where the successful applicant will be a member of a team working closely together on a set of defined problems, applying techniques from fields as diverse as phylogenetic analysis, microbiology, applied mathematics and biophysics.  The post-holder will support members of the lab and the PI in achieving the project aims through the maintenance of both bacterial and phytoplankton cell cultures and administration tasks associated with running a successful laboratory on a day-to-day basis.The work will be varied and include areas such as culturing and maintenance of both bacterial and phytoplankton cultures, microscopic and video analysis of bacterial and phytoplankton cells, image analysis, preparation of media, data entry, stock management and lab administration. There may also be the opportunity to support undergraduate and postgraduate students working in the lab.

The Physical Ecology Lab (www.physicalecologylab.org) offers a dynamic research environment where the successful applicant will be a member of a team working closely together across a number of disciplinary boundaries. Formed in 2012, the School of Life Sciences is central to the University’s strategy to build its STEM provision and research excellence in the sciences. The School is vibrant and supportive, with an emphasis on collegiality.

This position is fixed term for 24 months. End of fixed term contract: 31 Dec 2019
