FTE: Full time appointment working 37 hours per week (1.0 FTE)

Duration of Contract: Fixed term contract for two years (January 2018 – 31 December 2019)

We are seeking to appoint a postdoctoral research scientist to work within the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Hertfordshire (UH) and the Department of Neuroinflammation, Institute of Neurology (ION) at University College London (UCL).  The research fellow will also have access to the state of the arts facilities at the Stevenage Biocatalyst Unit located within the GlaxoSmithKline Stevenage site.

The successful applicant will work on a pharmacology / drug discovery project entitled “Neuroprotection by novel small molecules in an accurate model of the early demyelinating lesion in multiple sclerosis”.

You will have a PhD in Neuroscience, Pharmacology/Physiology, biochemistry or related subjects, a strong track record of biomedical research with a publication record and demonstrable knowledge of neurodegeneration. You will have shown an ability to design and implement high quality experiments and then to write high quality reports and scientific manuscripts. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively are required.

The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting in vitro and in vivo studies on the neuroprotective role of novel small molecules and will be provided with specific in vivo training. Previous in vivo expertise in neurodegeneration / neuroinflammation as well as drug discovery would be a distinct advantage. It is expected that a significant amount of work would be carried out at the ION, but the post holder will be an employee of UH.

The post holder will also be responsible for supporting our ongoing collaborations between UH and UCL.

Funding is available for a starting salary at UH Grade 7 point 30 (£32,548 p.a.).
