Salary: £27,285 - £29,799 pro rata pa depending on skills and experience

The School of Engineering and Technology’s highly successful and expanding Microengineering and Microfluidics Research Group seeks to recruit an enthusiastic engineer to support our portfolio of applied research and development projects. The Group has a long track record of developing prototype bio-analytical instrumentation for clients such as Dstl (UK MoD), the BBSRC, the EU, Innovate UK and commercial partners. The Group is well-integrated and multi-skilled, operating flexibly to deliver novel, instrumentation solutions. Group staff are primarily dedicated to R&D projects.

The appointee will hold a good engineering degree, will both enjoy and have experience of ‘hands-on’, prototype construction and welcome working in an informal, dynamic, client-focussed atmosphere with an emphasis on research project delivery and problem-solving.

The post requires an imaginative, flexible approach to practical engineering embracing several engineering disciplines and hence there will be excellent opportunities to develop new engineering skills. However we do require prior experience of prototype manufacture and electro-mechanical prototype construction. The appointee is expected to welcome the opportunity to learn new engineering skills outside their previous experience and mentorship will be provided to support this.

Whilst not an exhaustive list, relevant initial skills might include electronics construction and debugging, basic CAD competence with a modern CAD suite, experience of rapid prototyping techniques, a good level of competence with traditional hand-tools and basic facility with fabrication techniques such as milling.

The Group has well-equipped laboratories, including the majority of technologies required to seamlessly deliver Research & Development outputs. These include a class1000 microfabrication clean-room, 8m3 aerosol exposure chamber, CNC and laser plastics prototyping, flow cytometry, optical surface profiling, polymer deposition and a small microbiology suite. Inter alia, the Group has particular expertise in microfluidics, millifluidic systems, electro-wetting on dielectric (EWOD), air sampling and rapid prototyping.

The appointee will have a primary and a secondary lab-based, ‘hands-on’ role. Primarily, they will contribute strongly to the manufacture, build, evaluation and optimisation of prototype instrumentation systems. Secondly they will be responsible for day-to-day laboratory organisation: including maintaining stocks of commonly-used materials and consumables and liaising with colleagues to jointly ensure collective maintenance of a well-organised laboratory.
