Science Portfolio Adviser/Developer

The Wellcome Trust - Infection and Immunobiology

We are seeking a Science Portfolio Adviser or Developer to contribute to managing our Infection and Immunobiology portfolio.

About the role

In the role you will liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including other funders, and provide our community of researchers with support and advice. You will need to keep abreast of the scientific field. You will employ critical skills to assess the quality of applications for funding. You may develop and implement new initiatives and partnerships.

You will:

  • contribute to the implementation and evaluation of Infection and Immunobiology funding initiatives in themed areas of responsibility
  • develop and maintain relationships with relevant academic communities and others, including existing and potential Wellcome grantholders, other funding agencies, and policy makers
  • engage with the scientific community to encourage quality applications through speaking at community meetings and conferences, advising potential applicants, and other communication activities to promote Wellcome funding schemes
  • provide critical scientific review of applications
  • working closely with our Grants Management team to manage the application and review process, including internal triage of applications, appropriate referee selection, appointment of committee members, and ensuring that quality information is provided to funding committees.

About you

Expertise in immunology would be highly desirable, as would experience of working in a funding, policy or management role.

In order to be successful you will need:

  • ability to see the big picture and recognise scientific potential and opportunities
  • ability to communicate effectively and confidently with individuals and groups
  • experience of working effectively and cooperatively within a team/matrix structure
  • strong analytical and writing skills

You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline.
