Research Associate in Radiation detector development of novel robotic applications

We are seeking a dynamic and well-motivated postdoctoral researcher to join a UK research programme to develop significant advances in the adoption and use of robotics in the UK and international nuclear industry. Robots and robot-delivered sensory devices provide a means of assessing and decommissioning nuclear plant that would be too radioactive for human workers to undertake safely. Accordingly, you will be involved in developing robotic devices for inspection and monitoring of nuclear plant, including waste packages, pipelines and processing cells. Such environments are often highly complex, shielded, anomalously structured, partially degraded and with variable low to extreme radiation conditions.

For this role in Physics we are seeking an expert in the development of bespoke, fast read-out radiation detection systems with experience in either semi-conductor or scintillator detection systems.

Over an initial duration of 2 years the selected researchers will work on applied robotics and sensor projects aimed at solving technical challenges enunciated by partners in the nuclear industry.

You will have close contact with industry partners as well as a wide academic team at the University of Bristol led by Professor Tom Scott, Director of the SW Nuclear Hub and spanning between the disciplines of physics, materials, mechanical engineering and electronic engineering. You will be based in the South West Nuclear Hub building on the central university precinct and have access to laboratory space in the School of Physics, the BRL, Queens School of Engineering and Fenswood Farm research station, Long Ashton.

You will have, or be about to obtain, a PhD in Physics, Mechanical or Electronic Engineering or a related Engineering subject and have a good understanding in the design, development and building of devices and robotic control systems.

Although you will be based at the University of Bristol, work will also use facilities at Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (KURRI) in Japan and involve technology deployments on UK nuclear sites.

This is an open-ended contract with funding currently secured for 24-month in the first instance.
