The successful candidate will be an excellent teacher and scholar, holding or close to completing a PhD or equivalent qualification in law or a cognate discipline, and with ambitious scholarly agendas that complement and expand current strengths in the School.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate outstanding research performance and potential, as well as superb teaching. In exceptional situations, we may appoint candidates who establish a sustained and successful record of excellence in teaching and pedagogical enhancement, and who can contribute to leadership in the delivery of our educational mission, but who are not engaged in intensive non-pedagogical research activity. As well as teaching and research activity, post-holders will be required to undertake administrative tasks at a level suitable to the appointment.

Birmingham Law School is a diverse, civic and global law school. We are committed to the pursuit of excellence in research and teaching, and to supporting academic work that is influential in and beyond the academy. Our scholarly community includes academics pursuing doctrinal, comparative, critical, socio-legal, interdisciplinary and empirical work and all methodological approaches are welcomed and supported. Our current research centres include the flagship Centre for Professional Legal Education and Research, through which we also provide extensive clinical legal opportunities to our students.

We are proud of the diversity and excellence of our student body, and committed to enabling students to develop into independent researchers and thinkers throughout their time with us. We are also proud of, and committed to furthering, the diversity of our staff body, and we welcome applications from candidates of all genders, backgrounds, and identities who wish to become part of our scholarly community. We are one of the world’s Top 100 Law Schools and consistently named as one of the UK’s best law schools.

As a member of Birmingham Law School, those appointed to these posts will join a lively and flourishing School where they will enjoy opportunities for intellectual and other leadership, challenging and rewarding teaching, and membership of a collegiate and highly ambitious community of scholars and students.
