Fixed term part-time contract for 10 months (20 hours per week)

A Research Fellow is sought to work on a project which examines the effectiveness of universities’ widening participation initiatives from the perspective of users. Interviews will be undertaken with secondary school students in low participation neighbourhoods, university students and university graduates with widening participation backgrounds. The focus is on (a) how individuals account for career aspirations, constraints and enablers at each stage of their career (b) how they account for widening participation initiatives and the extent to which these are able to facilitate individuals’ careers (c) how they account for their success and/or failure at each stage – what helped along the way and what hindered.

The post involves conducting literature reviews, undertaking semi-structured in-depth interviews, coding and analyzing qualitative data, writing reports, developing toolkits and manuals and assisting in disseminating the findings through workshops.

The post holder will have a PhD qualification or be near to completing a PhD in Organisational Behaviour, Management, Sociology or a closely related subject. Knowledge of social class theory, identity theory and social mobility issues in the UK is desirable. The postholder will also have the ability to work independently; plan and deliver work to strict deadlines; write clearly and accessibly; search and analyse electronic data sources.

A DBS check will be required for this post.
