Director, Strategic Communications and Engagement

University of the West of England, Bristol - Department of Strategic Communications & Engagement

The Higher Education sector is experiencing a monumental shift right now. As aspects of HE open up and evolve, it has never been more important for universities to distinguish themselves and their offering.

As one of the UK’s largest universities, UWE Bristol is on the front foot, and having established a strong strategic communications and engagement department we are now looking for a courageous, innovative and experienced leader to shape our future.

Embedded in the University’s strategic decision making framework, the Director of Strategic Communications and Engagement is an important and influential post that is completely connected to the University’s top team.

The role will suit a strong leader, mentor and coach. We are looking for someone who understands how to manage determined stakeholders and set priorities, how to influence the agenda, and most importantly, how to generate a positive and energising working environment for their teams. You will have extensive experience working within strategic marketing or communications and will understand the nuances of senior stakeholder management.

Reporting to the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Student Experience, you will work closely with the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and Executive Deans, and have a seat at top decision-making tables across academic and professional service forums.

You will be responsible for the following:

  • Reputation management. Building and managing the University’s profile and reputation locally, nationally, and globally with a broad range of audiences across all channels managed within the department’s portfolio.
  • Business growth. Partnering with stakeholders across the University to understand their business drivers and develop, deliver and manage engagement strategies to help the university achieve its strategic goals.
  • Strategic leadership. Work collaboratively with senior academics and professional services staff to develop marketing and communications in a sustainable way, and ensure consistent and coherent delivery and implementation across the University.
  • Expert advice. Provide strategic advice to the Vice-Chancellor and other senior staff on matters relating to communication, marketing and engagement. Contribute to university strategic decision-making through participation in leadership forums.
  • Team leadership. Lead, coach and mentor a team of professionals, providing them with the right environment to plan and deliver creative, innovative solutions that further the University’s engagement strategies.
  • Cultural leadership. Leading by example, build, nurture and promote a positive culture of pride and collegiality amongst the University’s community of staff, students, alumni and business partners.

This is a rewarding role at a university that quickly gets under your skin, in a good way - in a sector that is on the cusp of something quite extraordinary.
