University of Exeter – Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health.

About the award

Up to 12 PhD bursaries are available in 2018 for transdisciplinary research on health and wellbeing based in the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health.

Context

The Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health opened in April 2017 with a £4.1m research grant from the Wellcome Trust with match-funding from the University of Exeter. The Centre builds on successful research clusters across the University and on the University’s Humanities and Social Science Strategy. Transdisciplinary and international in its approach, the Centre brings together leading scholars across the medical humanities, social sciences and health research with the aim of understanding how we can create and sustain cultures and environments that enable health and wellbeing across the life course.

Who can apply?

The Centre welcomes applications from those with traditional academic backgrounds (at least an upper second class honours degree or equivalent) and / or those with work or lived experience that provides the necessary and relevant expertise in the research area. The Centre will accept applications from individuals of all nationalities.

How to apply

The application process has two stages:

Stage 1 (expression of interest): Deadline: 14th January 2018

Applicants are strongly encouraged to start by submitting an Expression of Interest as early as possible to ensure that appropriate discussion takes place between candidates and potential supervisors, increasing the chance that the application fits the Centre’s vision. Applications will focus on the Centre’s research themes: transforming institutions, transforming publicly engaged research, transforming relations, and transforming health across the life course. Candidates should identify one of the core Centre staff as a primary supervisor for their research:

Professor Anne Barlow
Professor Manuela Barreto
Professor Linda Clare
Dr Robin Durie
Professor Lora Fleming
Professor Nick Groom
Professor Steve Hinchliffe
Professor Mark Jackson
Dr Karyn Morrissey
Professor Laura Salisbury
Dr Felicity Thomas
Professor Katrina Wyatt

The Expression of Interest should be sent to this Primary Supervisor with the following documents:

• A 500 word project outline
• A 500 word justification for how the proposal meets the Centre’s principles
• The candidate’s CV

Stage 2 (formal application): Deadline:  31st January 2018

Although candidates are strongly encouraged to submit an Expression of Interest by the relevant deadline, if you have missed that you can still submit a formal application. In this case, candidates are still encouraged to contact a prospective supervisor with the information listed above, to maximize fit with the Centre.
