Assistant Director, Creative Strategy

University of the West of England, Bristol - Strategic Communications & Engagement

Job overview:

The Higher Education sector is experiencing a monumental shift right now. As aspects of HE open up and evolve, it has never been more important for universities to distinguish themselves and their offering.

As one of the UK’s largest universities, UWE Bristol is on the front foot, and having established a strong strategic communications and engagement department we are now looking for a courageous strategic leader to help develop a culture of creativity and innovation.

A senior and influential post, the Assistant Director Creative Strategy leads a team of creative and technical professionals. You will drive the delivery of innovative marketing and communication projects that raise UWE Bristol’s profile across all key audience groups.

The role will suit a strong and engaging strategic leader with a flair for innovative thinking, and a proven ability to motivate multi-disciplinary creative teams. We are looking for an experienced brand advocate who understands strategic brand, visual identity and channel engagement. You will have extensive experience working within a similarly large and complex education based organisation, and will demonstrate a talent for influencing and negotiation.

Reporting to the Director Strategic Marketing and Communication, you will work closely with the Deputy Director Strategic Planning, Assistant Director Corporate Communications, and a range of internal divisions and external partners. You will have a seat at top decision-making tables that affect student experience, strategic programme development and curriculum development.

You will be responsible for the following:

  • Strategic development. Help to develop University marketing and communication strategies and priorities, as a member of the senior leadership team, while directly leading the development, implementation and review of the creative brand strategy in response.
  • Creative development. As custodian of the University’s visual identity, provide leadership and creative direction to the creative and channel management teams, while driving the development of visual branding and its alignment across engagement channels.
  • People, project and functional management. Lead and motivate cross-functional groups, own the full lifecycle of marketing and communications projects, and be accountable for the creative team’s business operations and resources.
  • Communications and partnership. Promote the University to internal and external audiences, consult stakeholders on service improvement, and forge strong relationships with partner agencies and relevant organisations to secure support and good service.

This is a rewarding role at a university that quickly gets under your skin, in a good way - in a sector that is on the cusp of something quite extraordinary.
