The University of Bristol is seeking to appoint an outstanding academic leader as Dean of the Faculty of Science. The Faculty has an international reputation for excellence and is ranked in the top three in the UK for research.

This is a role of strategic and transformational leadership, with an emphasis on achieving world-class standards in education at the same time as taking the Faculty’s research activities to new heights, in the context of ambitious University-wide initiatives that include the development of the £300 million Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.

The Dean will be a key figure within the University of Bristol, serving on the University Management Team , promoting the achievement of the University’s vision and overall objectives, and advancing the collective formulation and delivery of the University’s academic strategy.

Candidates will have outstanding leadership credentials and a track record of excellence in research and education as well as in developing internal and external partnerships. The ability to engage, lead, and influence across wide range of disciplines is a key requirement of the role as is a deep commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Depending on the nature of the Dean’s research, support in the form of one or more staff and the provision of equipment and facilities will be made available to the Dean to allow them to continue with their research during their term of office.

The appointment as Dean is for a period of five years initially, with the possibility of extension after this period.  After the term of office as Dean, the postholder will remain in post as a professor.

The Faculty of Science is one of the six Faculties that form the academic organisation of the University of Bristol. The Faculty is a diverse and vibrant community of around 3,600 undergraduate and 800 postgraduate students, 280 permanent academic staff, 350 research staff and over 200 professional services staff. Its educational strategy is focussed on providing a high quality and academically challenging educational experience to all of its students, with staff enabling students to achieve their full potential. The Faculty is proud of the outstanding quality of its research: the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 ranked the University of Bristol in the top five institutions in the UK for research.
