Data Stories

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to work on Data Stories (http://gtr.rcuk.ac.uk/projects?ref=EP%2FP025676%2F1), an EPSRC project involving industrial partners across the UK, which runs from October 2017 until September 2020.

Data Stories will look at novel means for bringing data to people, through art, games, and storytelling. It will examine the impact localisation, topicalisation, participation, and shareability have on the engagement of the public with factual evidence substantiated by digital content. It will deliver tools and guidance, that community and civic groups need to achieve broader participation and support for their initiatives, and empower artists, activists, and journalists to communicate using data in inspiring, informative ways.

Your main roles will involve developing tools that improve people’s experience and engagement with data, carrying out research in these areas, and publishing/presenting this research in top-rated conferences and journals.

You should have a PhD* in Computer Science, Web Science, Data Science, or a related field or equivalent work experience. Expertise in the following areas is essential: human-data interaction, data-discovery, and data summarisation/visualisation. The ideal candidate brings a deep understanding of the following topics: game design/gamification, data science, machine learning, and/or information extraction. The position requires excellent design and coding skills, both in software and data artefacts.

The candidate must have outstanding time management, organisation, and collaboration skills. The post includes meetings with the project team and industry partners in locations across the UK. It requires fluent English communication skills to engage with colleagues, engage in public outreach, produce publications, and present work to different audiences.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
