The Department of Philosophy seeks to appoint a Post-doctoral Research Fellow to work on the ERC-funded project ‘A Framework for Metaphysical Explanation in Physics’ (FraMEPhys), led by Dr Alastair Wilson.

FraMEPhys, a major 5-year project funded by the European Research Council, is investigating the nature of explanation in physics, with particular focus on metaphysical and non-causal explanations (including grounding explanations, geometrical explanations and unificatory explanations). The aim of FraMEPhys is to combine recent progress in metaphysics, philosophy of science and philosophy of physics to enhance our understanding of the nature of metaphysical explanation in physics. Case studies of special interest include curved spacetime, closed timelike curves and quantum entanglement.

The research fellow will (by the time of taking up the position) have a PhD in Metaphysics, Philosophy of Science, or Philosophy of Physics and high level analytical capability, as well as a demonstrated ability to work independently to the very highest levels of research excellence. This position will involve investigating, inter alia, the application of structural-equations models for causal explanation to metaphysical explanation.

The Department of Philosophy has an outstanding international reputation, with particular specializations in Metaphysics, Philosophy of Mind, and Global Ethics, and an active and successful PhD programme. As a member of the Department, the research fellow will join a lively and flourishing research community where they will enjoy opportunities for intellectual and other leadership in a collegiate and highly ambitious environment.

This is a full-time post with a duration of three years, with an anticipated start date of 1 September 2018.
