Battery Experimentalist for the ATTESTS Project

The Electrochemical Science and Engineering Group at Imperial College London is looking to employ a battery experimentalist or battery engineer to work as part of a larger consortium on the ATTESTS (Automotive Technology Transfer of Energy Storage Thermal Strategies) project. The ATTESTS project is funded by Innovate UK under the Faraday Challenge and is a collaboration between Imperial College London, and Rolls Royce plc to conduct a feasibility study on the use of advanced thermal management technologies for battery packs.

The successful candidate will work as part of a large successful research group to test advanced battery thermal management systems. You will work with our industrial partner to translate those advances into state-of-the-art battery pack designs.

Researchers working on the ATTESTS project will be part of the £246M Faraday Challenge and will work alongside the Faraday Institution, which will be one of the biggest coordinated research efforts in batteries in the World.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • You will conduct research into battery thermal management, developing new approaches for testing and evaluating different thermal management strategies and their effect on degradation.
  • You will work with systems, control and design engineers in industry to apply that knowledge in the design of battery packs.

Skills, knowledge and experience

  • You will have a PhD or Masters Degree in Physical Sciences, or Engineering, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.
  • You will have a good understanding of heat transfer and fluid dynamics and experience of designing thermal management systems and the design of experimental test rigs.
  • You will have experience working in a research environment and good practice in research.
  • A knowledge of lithium ion batteries and experience in testing lithium ion batteries would be helpful.
  • Experience of publication in relevant and refereed journals would also be helpful.
  • Experience of working in or with industry would be helpful.

Key information:
This is a fixed term position for up to 12 months.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum.
