Head of School of Psychology

University of Sunderland - Faculty of Health Sciences & Wellbeing

37 hours per week (for nominal purposes)

Within the Faculty of Health Sciences & Wellbeing, the School of Psychology forms one of our three schools, alongside our School of Nursing and Health Sciences and School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. We are now looking to recruit a new Head of School of Psychology to join our Faculty Executive.

The School of Psychology currently delivers a number of British Psychological Society accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and has in place an ambitious growth plan which includes the development of three new undergraduate programmes due to recruit in September 2018. In addition to the on campus delivery, the School works with a number of local FE providers, an international partner and is currently accrediting the MSc Psychology to be delivered via a distance learning model.

Recent investment in the new School location within Shackleton House, sitting as part of our Sciences Complex at City Campus has created an environment with research space for students and staff, IT lab, interview rooms and staff office space. Further development of the building by September 2018 will provide a unique floor dedicated to Mental Health and Wellbeing. Within this space students will have access to a Neuropsychological Testing Suite where EEG testing can be conducted within a fully immersive room, Psychological Therapies Suite, a Child Observation Room and a simulated Mental Health/Learning Disabilities ward.

These new facilities, the recruitment of staff to maintain our SSR and, our new undergraduate programmes provide the perfect opportunity for the School to continue to develop. The shared location with practitioner programmes of nursing, pharmacy and paramedics, as well as the suite of sports sciences programmes, provides an ideal environment for our focus on health and wellbeing.

Inter professional and interdisciplinary teaching and research are a key focus for our staff and who are already involved in a number of teaching and research projects across the Faculty. It is anticipated that this will be an area for future development for us with other areas of growth to include expansion of the taught postgraduate provision and the number of PGR students, as well as income generation and research. We also envisage that staff within the School will also make a significant contribution to REF 2021.

It is an exciting time to join us and therefore the successful applicant will have a high personal academic and/or professional standing in a relevant area with which to take our plans forward. Your proven record of senior level leadership in a large/complex organisation, good knowledge and understanding of the higher education environment and ‘can do’ approach will be key.
