Postdoctoral Research Associate / Postdoctoral Research Fellow

University of Exeter - College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences - Engineering/Renewable Energy

The Post

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate / Postdoctoral Research Fellow to support the work of Dr Xiaoyu Yan on two research projects funded by the EU. This post is available for 17 months from 01 March 2018 through to 31 July 2019, with some scope for flexibility. The “Intelligent Community Energy (ICE)” project aims to design and implement innovative smart energy solutions for isolated territories in the Interreg English Channel area. The “Co-processing of Coal Mine and Electronic Wastes: Novel Resources for a Sustainable Future (CEReS)” project aims to develop an integrated flowsheet for the co-processing of coal mine and electronic waste to alleviate the environmental impact of pyritic coal mine wastes while recovering value from low grade scrap printed circuit boards. The role will be based at our Penryn campus, near Falmouth, in the Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI), a GBP 30 million interdisciplinary centre leading cutting-edge research into solutions to problems of climate change; in doing so we are enhancing people’s lives by improving their relationships with the environment.

The post will include the development of life cycle assessment (LCA) tools to assess and compare: 1) the sustainability of different future energy system configurations in a constrained network context within the ICE project; and 2) environmental impacts of metals recovery and waste management options within the CEReS project. The post holder will work with a diverse group of research partners at Exeter and beyond to collect and synthesise the data necessary for the LCA tools.

You will:

  • Possess a relevant PhD (or near completion) and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of LCA research methods and software tools to work within energy or waste treatment related research programmes.
  • At Postdoctoral Research Fellow level, the successful applicant will be a nationally recognised expert in LCA on energy technologies or systems; and be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.
  • Be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and develop research programmes and methodologies.
