Genomics Core Facility Head

University of Cambridge - Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute

We seek a scientist with an outstanding track record to provide leadership to the Genomics core facility at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute (CRUK CI) (www.cruk.cam.ac.uk). This scientist will manage a team of nine staff who directly support the genomic studies of the Institute's 20 research groups. Our facility currently provides a growing, production-scale next-generation sequencing service (~2,000 flowcell lanes per year, annual budget ~£3m) supporting studies of genome sequence and modification, exome or other selective resequencing, transcriptome, copy-number analysis, and single cell measurements. In addition to supporting the CRUK CI the facility provides services to over 800 users in 80+ research groups across 12 collaborating University of Cambridge Institutes, Departments, and the CRUK Cambridge Major Cancer Centre (https://crukcambridgecentre.org.uk/). In addition to supporting current services, the Genomics facility manager is expected to drive technological innovation in collaboration with Group Leaders for example, in areas such as approaches to early detection/diagnosis of cancer, single-cell genomics, and nanopore-based 3rd generation sequencing methods.

An ideal candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent) or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline, coupled with national recognition of work in genomics, transcriptomics, and/or single-cell biology. The candidate will be able to demonstrate proven ability to effectively manage timelines and deliverables either within the context of research service provision or a major collaborative research project. Previous line management experience is essential, as is the ability to successfully work across a variety of groups and departments to balance the needs of CRUK CI users and collaborators. As this facility has a significant budget, experience of financial management and successful negotiation in procurement is required, as is the ability to organize the development or adaptation of novel methods with commercial and academic partners.

The CRUK CI is a department of the University of Cambridge with 430 staff situated on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.  It is supported with generous core funding from Europe's top cancer charity, Cancer Research UK. Since it opened in 2007, the Institute has established a reputation for international excellence in cancer research, with a strong focus in genomics, in collaboration with clinicians and researchers across academia and industry. The Institute's research ranges from basic experimental and computational cancer biology through translational cancer research to clinical application. The Institute is a state-of-the-art research facility where the scientific Core Facilities perform a fundamental role supporting research.

If you believe that leading a world-class Genomics facility is the next step in your career then we look forward to receiving your application. We'd also welcome applications from individuals who are progressing in their career (starting salary may be adjusted).

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check and a security check.
