The Faculty of Business, Law and Politics (comprising Hull University Business School – HUBS – and the School of Law and Politics) is pleased to offer a number of PhD scholarships to candidates of exceptional academic potential. Successful candidates will work with teams of researchers of internationally acknowledged expertise, and benefit from dedicated PGR training and facilities.

Scholarships will cover the full tuition fees for a maximum of three years on a full-time PhD degree. Scholarship renewal each year will be subject to satisfactory academic progress. In addition to tuition fees,

  • UK/EU students will receive a stipend of £14,553 per year for a maximum of 3 years.
  • International students will receive a stipend of £5,809 per year for a maximum of 3 years.

Our scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the strongest overall applications, in respect of research proposals on topics that staff members are available to supervise. 

Applications are welcomed across all areas of business, law and politics, but proposals are particularly encouraged in areas that align with the Faculty’s strategic research themes:

  • De-globalization
  • Applied Ethics
  • Systems Research
  • Leadership and Strategy
  • Socio-economic Development and Policy

Am I eligible?

In order to be considered for this scholarship, applicants must:

  1. Apply to study on the PhD programme online via MyAdmin (see ‘How to apply’ below).
  2. Be able to commence their studies on 4th June 2018.
  3. Not be a current PhD student at the University of Hull (the scholarships are only for new, not continuing, students).
  4. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University's English Language requirements.

How to apply

Applicants must apply online via their MyAdmin account. Further details on the application process and creating a MyAdmin account can be found on the postgraduate admissions website. Applicants must complete the online application form and submit the following supporting documents:

  • A research proposal of approximately 2,500 words (excluding references). The link above will take applicants to guidelines for writing a research proposal and we strongly advise adherence to these.
  • A personal statement outlining the motivation for postgraduate research and making the case for the scholarship award
  • A current detailed CV, identifying any research employment or experience and, where applicable, details of conference presentations or publications
  • Copies of educational transcripts and degree certificates
  • Two good references


The deadline for scholarship applications is 8th February 2018 for entry on 4th June 2018.

Successful applicants will be notified by 20th March 2018 and the scholarship will be offset against your tuition fee at registration.

Any scholarship applications that do not have all documentation as stipulated above will not be considered.
