Senior Lecturer (Fashion Promotion - Programme Leader)

Manchester Metropolitan University

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is a unique environment where Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences sit alongside the Manchester School of Art and the Manchester Fashion Institute. Student experience is at the heart of everything we do. We’re proud to offer state-of-the-art facilities, including digital and technical workshops, studios and gallery spaces designed to enhance learning and collaboration.

The Manchester Fashion Institute is one of the largest providers of Fashion education in the UK and its curriculum reflects the broad and contemporary nature of the global fashion industry. The Fashion team is a highly professional and collegiate group who have been proactive in establishing innovative programmes of study to serve the needs of a 1500+ undergraduate and postgraduate student population.

In this role, you will manage the existing provision and further develop Fashion Promotion as a subject within the Fashion Institute, contributing to research development and providing high-quality teaching and supervision at undergraduate, and masters levels. The Department is a collegial one, with an emphasis on mutual support, and organised around the principle of working together as a team to achieve the University’s strategic objectives (www2.mmu.ac.uk/about-us/our-strategy).

We offer a stimulating environment for an exceptional scholar along with an excellent level of staff development and research support.

Fashion Promotion is a creative, exploratory, flexible and dynamic subject area which is underpinned with business content and cultural and contextual theory. You will lead on curriculum content which is designed to enable creative progress aligned with current, industry knowledge with practical engagement and allows students to cover areas including; fashion image making/photography, fashion film, media communication, fashion styling & wardrobe, social media content, website design, show production/curation, journalism and brand communication & strategy.

This will require specialist experience and knowledge across a number of these areas and a proven ability to teach undergraduates and post-graduates within the field of fashion promotion. You will be expected either to undertake your own research which is REF 2021 eligible, or to be in a position to maximise synergies between your own professional industry expertise/practice and the Institute’s already-existing academic research, applied commercial consultancy and project-based practice.

We encourage and promote research activity concerned with the ‘thinking’, ‘doing’ and ‘making’ of clothing and fashion. Our research invariably engages with the real world, be it through inventing new products, the exploration of modern consumer needs in a digital age, the analysis of manufacturing efficiency, an advanced understanding of the contemporary design process, or through pioneering the re-invention of fashion craft.

As a collegial, team-player you'll have the ability to mentor and nurture the talents of others to the benefit of the Department and University as a whole.

The anticipated start date for the successful applicant is April 2018.

If you would like to join our people and share our ambition, we would love to hear from you.
