Here you can also find details of the main teaching base, which is Governance and Development Policy (GDP) and the over ISS Research Programme Global Development and Social Justice.

Candidates whose research focuses on the Global South, the poor and vulnerable will be preferred. The candidate should also be familiar with governance as a multi-stakeholder process where state, market, and civil society all have roles to play. In addition, this vacancy requires insight into policy dynamics centring on processes at global, national, or local governance levels. These are at play from agenda setting to implementation, and often in relatively adverse conditions in the Global South. Valorisation, contributions to public debate and capacity building projects are also important to the ISS.

Desired skills and expertise

We are looking for candidates who meet the following requirements:

  • A PhD in a relevant field of social sciences (for example policy studies, development studies, sociology, political science) and familiarity/experience with development studies and practices;
  • A documented research interest in governance and public policy;
  • An active publication strategy and solid publications record (in line with career stage);
  • Demonstrated capacity and skills in teaching MA students, including thesis supervisions and teaching management; and in externally financed advisory and capacity development programs;
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to teaching, research, and service in multicultural environments.

Additional advantages

  • Ability to teach in courses on research methodology, e. g. mixed methods of social science research;
  • Practical experience with/exposure to working in the field of policy making; candidates familiar with developing countries are especially invited to apply;
  • Given the current composition of the ISS academic staff and priorities relating to staff diversity, the institute has a preference for applicants originating from the Global South and encourages applications from minority candidates.

Conditions of Employment

The selected candidate will be offered a contract at the level of Assistant Professor, with the possibility of tenure subject to fulfilment of conditions that would be specified dependent on previous career. The successful candidate is invited to start as soon as possible.

In accordance with the conditions applied at Erasmus University Rotterdam as indicated in the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO NU) of the Dutch universities, the salary is dependent on the candidate’s experience and ranges from €3,427.- to €5,330.- gross per month under full-time contract. In addition, EUR pays an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8.3% and offers excellent secondary benefits.

Please submit your application, including a CV and a motivation letter by email to apgpp@iss.nl. Deadline for submitting your application is 24 January 2018. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews in the second half of February.
