Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London. The position is funded by the European Research Council, and forms part of a program involving scientific computing, Mirror Symmetry, and the classification of Fano manifolds.

The project will involve working closely with Prof.Tom Coates (and his geometry research group at Imperial) on topics related to a program to find and classify Fano manifolds using Mirror Symmetry. Depending on the expertise and interests of the candidate, this could involve algebraic geometry, polyhedral combinatorics, Mirror Symmetry, scientific computing, or algebraic number theory. The position will also involve working with Prof. Tom Coates and Dr. Alexander Kasprzyk to develop the open source mathematical software that underlies this research program: see https://bitbucket.org/fanosearch/ and https://bitbucket.org/pcas/.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD, or equivalent level of professional qualifications and/or experience, in a research field relevant to the project: algebraic geometry, polyhedral combinatorics, Mirror Symmetry, scientific computing, or algebraic number theory.

It is essential that you have:

Experience:

  • A track record of independent research
  • Experience of, or openness to, collaborative research

Skills and abilities:

  • Ability to carry out original research and to produce published research papers
  • Ability to identify, develop and apply new concepts, techniques and methods
  • High level analytical capability

Please complete and upload an application form as directed, also providing a CV and a list of publications.

For any specific queries regarding the post please contact Prof. Tom Coates (t.coates@imperial.ac.uk).

Should you have any queries about the application process please contact Mrs Rusudan Svanidze, Research Operations Manager (r.svanidze@imperial.ac.uk).
