Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK) and Rome (Italy).

The Hamburg Unit of EMBL hosts an international laboratory with close to one hundred staff and fellows. The main activities are focused on research in structural biology, the provision of experimental facilities to the external research community, and advanced training for scientists. EMBL Hamburg coordinates and is involved in a number of national and international funded projects.

The Outreach and Training Officer will be embedded in the Hamburg Unit Administration and main responsibilities will be:

  • To coordinate training, seminar and workshop activities and scientific meetings of the Hamburg Unit in co-operation with the Unit’s research and service groups
  • To co-ordinate the Unit’s outreach and public relation activities, in cooperation with EMBL’s Strategy and Communication team in Heidelberg and external on-site partner research organizations

The post holder will also participate in joint tasks within the Administration team which has a broad portfolio of duties including human resources, finance, grants management support in close collaboration with the headquarters. Possible changes of task distribution will be coordinated with other members of the team and the supervisor, by both opening career opportunities and by making best use of available expertise and qualifications.

Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will hold a Master or PhD in natural sciences with experience in structural biology or a related research area. Previous know-how in research training and/or the development of training materials will be an important asset. Experience in designing and running scientific courses from introductory to advanced levels is necessary.

In addition to appropriate project management skills, the successful candidate will have excellent organisational and communication skills as well as the ability to contribute effectively to a team. Familiarity with Windows, MS Suite applications and other Internet applications is essential. A working knowledge of other operating systems (e.g. UNIX/Linux) is highly desirable. HTML editing and designing, as well as knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, QuarkXpress or other drawing and page-layout programmes are considered to be an advantage. Fluency in English is essential and familiarity with other European languages is desirable.
