Lecturer in Childhood Studies

University of Essex - Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies

Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies

The Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies is recognised internationally as one of the leading Departments for work that focuses on the role of the unconscious mind in mental health, culture and society. We are now seeking to appoint an energetic Lecturer in the field of Childhood Studies to drive and develop this new, innovative programme.

The Role and Duties

You will take up a teaching and organisational role on BA Childhood Studies and you will contribute to other programmes at both Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) levels such as FdA Therapeutic Communication and Therapeutic Organisations and MA Psychoanalytic Studies. You will conduct high quality research and contribute to the Department’s outstanding research profile.

Other duties will include helping develop, support and review student placements and work-based learning; supporting students as a personal tutor in a pastoral or advisory role; supervising and supporting UG and PGT students in their research projects; developing and submitting high quality grant proposals and funding applications; and carrying out a range of administrative tasks within the department.

Qualifications and Skills required

Candidates are expected to hold a Master’s degree in a relevant subject area, or equivalent professional qualification and a PhD in a relevant subject area (or be in the final stages of completion), or equivalent professional qualification. Experience of professional work with children and young people is advantageous but not essential.

You will have a strong track record in research, with a record of substantial publications of peer-reviewed international quality, or demonstrable robust evidence that this will develop, and a clear publications plan for submission to REF 2021. In addition you will be required to demonstrate evidence of a coherent and fertile research agenda and have experience in relevant teaching, or demonstrable potential to achieve this.

You will need to be committed to participating in a growing department and helping to create and sustain a high-quality learning and research community.

This is a permanent, full-time role for 36 hours a week starting on 1 August 2018.

We particularly welcome applications from those who identify as female or non-binary and those from an ethnic minority as they are under-represented in the department.

At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
