PhD Studentship: Speculative design, playful design

University of Southampton - Winchester School of Art - Transforming Creativity Research Group

A newly playful culture is emerging, it is claimed, across entertainment, communication, education, activism and technology. Driven in part by the cultural economic dominance of videogames and social and participatory media, this ‘ludic century’ is a key challenge for the design of media technologies and experiences. Apps, gamification strategies, ‘serious games’ and ‘playable city’ initiatives, artist and activist interventions, popular media, hybrid and smart toys and newly augmented realities all compete for attention in a rapidly transforming postdigital media ecology.

We welcome applications from researchers interested in making a critical and/or creative intervention in this field. This research could address the theoretical and conceptual implications of ‘ludification’, ethnographic production studies of speculative and play design, and/or practice-based research on design for postdigital play.
