Applications are invited for the role of Director of Research in The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute (THIS Institute).

Funded by the Health Foundation, THIS Institute has a remit to advance research into how to improve quality and safety of patient care. Through collaborative partnerships across the UK and internationally, the Institute's mission is to create an enabling infrastructure for the NHS to become the world's largest producer of systematic learning about how to improve healthcare, and to establish improvement research as a leading academic field.

The post-holder will provide academic leadership for the institute by leading major programmes of applied research in healthcare improvement and strengthen the scientific foundations of improvement research by initiating, designing and executing research programmes and line managing a team of researchers. The Director of Research will be a member of the Senior Management Team, reporting directly to the Director (Professor Mary Dixon-Woods FAcSS FMedSci). Bringing academic leadership and hands-on practical knowledge of how to conduct research in healthcare, the post-holder will develop and implement world-class research programmes for the institute, leading a large team of researchers. S/he will work across the University and with NHS organisations, patient and public stakeholders, and charitable organisations to create strategic partnerships and collaboratively define transformational goals in improvement research.

Candidates must be internationally recognised leaders in the advancement of improvement research. They should have experience of leading large, complex research programmes and delivering them on time, to budget and to an excellent standard of scholarship. With an established bibliography of high quality research publications, they will have demonstrable expertise and experience in managing relationships with multiple diverse stakeholders internal and external to the university and the NHS.

Funds are available until April 2022. The post holder will be based at THIS Institute, Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Cambridge CB2 OAH (approximately 2 miles south of city centre).

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 March 2022 in the first instance.
