Research Associate in Mechanistic Weld Modelling

Based in a world leading research team in the Solid Mechanics Research Group (SMRG) within the School of Civil, Aerospace, and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol this is an exciting opportunity to join a world leading and vibrant team comprising more than 20 researchers.

This post is defined within a collaborative programme of research led by Frazer-Nash Consultancy as part of a successful Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) application funded by the UK Department of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). You will be using state of the art mechanistic modelling techniques to understand the development of residual stress in thick and thin section components as a result of advanced welding technologies which are candidates for the fabrication of future nuclear reactor designs (Generation IV and Small Modular Reactors). You will focus on Laser and Electron Beam welding processes, and their influence on residual stress development in safety-critical components. You will work closely with a post-doctoral research associate focussing on the fracture aspects of these welded structures. It is expected that you will compare the results of your mechanistic modelling with those estimated from state of the art thermo-mechanical modelling carried out by our industrial partners. Further, you will work in close collaboration with industrial partners, manage your time within a multi-disciplinary team, and ensure successful delivery of the project. You should be willing to travel within the UK and occasionally across Europe.

You will use the latest modelling software to simulate the welding process informed by the microstructure, kinetic, and chemistry of the parent and weld material. Based on the new understanding obtained in this project, you will make recommendations on the inclusion of residual stress in the engineering assessments used by the nuclear industry. Obtaining high quality models requires deep understanding of the welding procedure undertaken by our collaborator Nuclear AMRC. You will liaise with Nuclear AMRC to obtain sufficient information required for delivery of reliable, validated, and verified models.

You will have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science (or closely related discipline) and have good experience of mechanistic modelling of welding or similar physical processes (e.g. additive manufacturing, casting, or solidification). It would be desirable for you to have a wider knowledge of structural integrity (residual stress and fracture).
